Many Sports Started Out With The Use Of A Bamboo Pole

Pole vaulting has been an Olympic event since 1896. Prior to becoming an Olympic event, the sport was popular among the ancient Greeks. When the sport first took shape, a bamboo pole was used to make the jump. As time went on, and as the sport progressed, steel was used. Today, the pole is made from fiberglass. Although bamboo is no longer used in pole vaulting, the sport may have never come to be, if it hadn’t been for bamboo. Could you imagine? What would the Olympics be without a pole vaulting event?

Fishing is another sport in which a bamboo pole is used. Many fishing rods are made of bamboo. There are, of course, rods made of other materials. Fiberglass and carbon fiber rods have become very popular, but there are still people who use classic bamboo rods to this day. They prefer bamboo over man-made materials. Some fishing enthusiasts feel as if they are one with nature. They fish for fun rather than for competitive sport. They generally throw back their catches instead of taking them home and enjoying them for dinner. They do not enter contests to see who can catch the most fish or who can catch the largest fish. They don’t fish for fame or notoriety. For these people, a bamboo rod is perfect, as it suits their needs very well.

Many sports started out with the use of a bamboo pole. Some of the sports transformed as more durable materials became available. However, when given the choice, there are still sportsmen who prefer to use bamboo.
